Today we wanted to take some time to tell you the difference between the two processes we use to transfer images on to tiles: dye sublimation and kiln firing.
Dye Sublimation is the image transfer process we use for the majority of our tile mural projects. Dye sub tiles are great for any indoor mural projects, including: kitchen backsplashes, shower surrounds, wine cellars, and certain flooring applications.
The advantage dye sub tiles have over kiln fired tiles are that they are more affordable and can be created much quicker than the kiln fired tiles. We normally produce and ship all dye sub orders within 2 business days!
The downside to the dye sub tiles is that they will fade over time if exposed to direct sunlight.
Kiln Fired tiles are perfect for any outdoor installation location, such as pool areas, outdoor kitchens, public parks, and commercial signage.
Our kiln fired tiles are guaranteed not to fade due to UV rays from the sun. They are also great for install locations that are susceptible to freeze/thaw environments (ex- pools in areas that freeze over the winter).
To achieve this extra durability, there is a lot more labor involved in the image transfer process. As a result, both the production time and the price are often greater than the dye sub tiles.
So, should you go with kiln fired tiles or dye sublimated tiles for your tile mural project? Our answer: it depends on where the mural is being installed. If indoors, go with the dye sub and save some money. If going outdoors, go kiln fired and have the peace of mind that its durability will allow for years of enjoyment.
